Inventory, compiled by John Askling in 1967, includes biographical and genealogical information on the Hendersons and related families along with brief descriptions of the items in the collection. Of particular note are summaries of letters sent to Alexander from his sons in Ohio and family histories given at the beginning of each section of the inventory.

Alexander Henderson was the first member of the Henderson family to emigrate to the United States, arriving from from Glasgow, Scotland in 1756. He settled in Virginia to serve as the American representative of several Scottish mercantile firms. Alexander's brother, Richard, and his nephew, Alexander, also settled in America and were engaged in mercantile activities. In 1773, Alexander married Sarah Moore of Colchester, Va.
